For Italian exporters, the<br \/>\ncrisis has shifted from a threat of port closures to the daily reality of inflated freight costs and the<br \/>\nlogistical complexity of &amp;#39;last mile&amp;#39; Mediterranean feeder legs<\/p>\n<h3>Livorno, Italy, 12 March 2026<\/h3>\n<p>The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is beginning to reshape<br \/>\nglobal shipping routes and place growing pressure on European supply chains, with Italian<br \/>\nbusinesses facing longer transit times, rising freight costs, and increasing uncertainty in logistics<br \/>\nplanning, according to container logistics specialist Sogese. According to Sogese, a growing<br \/>\nnumber of containers remain stranded across ports and terminals in the Gulf region, disrupting<br \/>\nnormal cargo flows and equipment rotation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crisis is already creating pressure on local businesses operating in the region,\u201d said <strong>Andrea<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Monti, CEO and Managing Director of<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sogeseitalia.it\/en\">Sogese<\/a>. \u201cEach container trapped in the Middle East<br \/>\neffectively removes multiple pieces of equipment from circulation across global trade routes. This<br \/>\nhas an immediate knock-on effect on payment cycles, because shipments cannot be completed<br \/>\nwhile the cargo is held up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShipping networks are adapting rapidly to a much more uncertain geopolitical environment,\u201d<br \/>\nadded Monti. \u201cThe combined pressure from the Red Sea security situation and the tensions around<br \/>\nthe Strait of Hormuz is forcing carriers to rethink routes, schedules and risk exposure. For<br \/>\nEuropean shippers, this can cause 2\u20133x longer supply chain recovery time which translates into<br \/>\nlonger voyages, higher costs and less predictable transit times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disruption means that carriers and logistics operators may need to reposition containers from<br \/>\nother global markets to compensate for the equipment trapped in affected ports. Beyond shipping<br \/>\nroutes, the conflict is also creating operational challenges across the logistics chain.<br \/>\nEscalating tensions across the region and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have forced<br \/>\nmajor container carriers to suspend or reroute services serving the Gulf. Shipping lines including<br \/>\n<strong>Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company<\/strong> have begun<br \/>\nredirecting vessels to alternative routes or ports while imposing emergency conflict and war-risk<br \/>\nsurcharges on affected cargo.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption adds to existing pressures across the Red Sea and Suez Canal corridor, creating a<br \/>\nhighly complex routing environment for Asia\u2013Europe trade.<\/p>\n<h3>\nFreight rates and container availability under pressure<\/h3>\n<p>The imbalance in container availability is also expected to create volatility in freight pricing.<br \/>\nFreight markets have already begun reflecting the disruption. The Drewry World Container Index<br \/>\nshows container freight rates stabilising or rising on several trade lanes, with the Shanghai\u2013Genoa<br \/>\nroute trading at roughly $2,800 per 40-foot container in early March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever equipment becomes trapped in one region of the world, it creates a ripple effect across<br \/>\nglobal logistics networks,\u201d Monti explained. \u201cContainers will need to be repositioned from other<br \/>\nlocations, which temporarily tightens availability and can put upward pressure on freight and<br \/>\ncontainer prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Reliability concerns for shipping schedules<\/h3>\n<p>The crisis would also temporarily disrupt shipping schedules as carriers rearrange services and<br \/>\ncargo flows.<br \/>\nSogese notes that service realignments and rerouting could create localized congestion in certain<br \/>\nports, particularly where diverted cargo volumes suddenly increase.<br \/>\n\u201cLogistics networks are extremely interconnected,\u201d Monti said. \u201cWhen routes are rearranged<br \/>\nquickly, some ports can suddenly receive more vessels than expected while others see fewer calls.<br \/>\nThis can create temporary imbalances, with ships waiting longer to berth and schedules becoming<br \/>\nless reliable for a period of time.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Italian ports such as Livorno, Salerno, and Trieste are currently facing some operational<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>headwinds<\/strong>, with labor strikes and high yard utilization leading to intermittent delays. While it is true<br \/>\nthat most Asia\u2013Europe container traffic is now routed around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid<br \/>\nregional security concerns in the Gulf, the resulting uneven arrival of vessels has further strained<br \/>\nlocal port capacity, prompting congestion surcharges at hubs like Salerno.<\/p>\n<h3>Wider economic implications for Europe<\/h3>\n<p>Beyond logistics, the crisis is also contributing to volatility in global energy markets. Rising oil and<br \/>\ngas prices linked to Middle East tensions are increasing costs for shipping, manufacturing and<br \/>\ntransportation across Europe.<br \/>\nAccording to Sogese, sustained increases in energy prices could create broader economic risks if<br \/>\nthey persist. \u201cEnergy prices are a critical variable for logistics and industrial production,\u201d Monti said.<br \/>\n\u201cIf oil and gas costs remain elevated for an extended period, Europe could face the risk of inflation<br \/>\nrising without corresponding economic growth. That is a scenario businesses will be watching<br \/>\nclosely.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\nImpact on Italian ports and export sectors<\/h3>\n<p>For Italy, while ports remain open, the operational landscape is increasingly strained by yard<br \/>\ncongestion and labor disruptions at gateways like Livorno and Salerno. While much of the<br \/>\nAsia\u2013Europe container traffic has already bypassed the Gulf due to regional tensions, but the<\/p>\n<p>impact on Italian exports is substantial. Italy\u2019s \u20ac18\u201319 billion annual trade with the GCC spanning<br \/>\nacross machinery, aerospace, and agri-food is currently facing delayed schedules, spiked<br \/>\ninsurance premiums, and selective booking suspensions.
